Making Effective Decisions
in an AI-Enabled Law Firm
Legal professionals make decisions every day, from routine operational choices to complex matters involving competing priorities, incomplete information and significant risk. As AI is increasingly used to support research, analysis and the generation of options, effective decision-making depends on knowing how to use that input appropriately while retaining human judgement and accountability.
This course helps participants define decisions clearly, assess alternatives and apply a structured approach to reaching well-supported conclusions. They will explore how to avoid common decision-making traps, work effectively with others and recognise when AI-generated information should be questioned, verified or supplemented.
Course objectives:
- Understand different types of decisions and distinguish decisions from outcomes
- Define the decision to be made and identify the information, perspectives and constraints that should be considered
- Evaluate alternative courses of action using evidence, experience and professional judgement
- Understand how AI can support decision-making while recognising its limitations and the need for human oversight
- Recognise and overcome common decision-making traps, including bias and over-reliance on confident or plausible information
- Make effective decisions collaboratively and challenge recommendations constructively
- Retain responsibility and accountability for decisions informed by AI
- Review decisions and outcomes to strengthen future decision-making
