Delegation is more than assigning work. Done well, it gives colleagues responsibility and room to make decisions, with the reassurance that support is available. This course develops a supportive approach to delegation that benefits both the person delegating and the team member developing their skills.

Participants will learn and practise the course’s seven-step process, including choosing suitable work, setting clear expectations and providing appropriate support. They will also consider more complex situations, such as delegating to former peers or more senior colleagues. Where AI is available, participants will explore how it may support parts of a delegated task while ensuring that the colleague remains involved in the thinking and has an opportunity to learn.

• Understand the benefits of effective delegation for the person delegating, the colleague and the team.
• Recognise how a supportive leadership style helps others take responsibility and make decisions.
• Apply the seven-step process to delegate work effectively.
• Set clear expectations about the outcome, level of autonomy, support and follow-up.
• Decide when AI might support a delegated task and how to retain the colleague’s involvement and development.
• Adapt your approach when delegating in more complex situations, including to former peers or more senior colleagues.
